Baptism - a happy family occasion

(see also Weddings, Funerals)

We welcome enquiries about Baptism (Christening) in our church.
Baptisms take place at the All Age service on the first Sunday of the month.

Baptism at Waltham St Lawrence

Funerals

A funeral service marks the passing of a life.

Some deaths bring sought-after release, others are especially traumatic, distressing or unexpected.

Funerals generate many, many emotions, rekindle memories, and remind us of the fragility of life,
and can
help us to make sense of life and death.

Our Priest-in-Charge will visit the family to help start all the arrangements.

Funeral services can take place in the parish Church, followed by a burial or by a short service at the appropriate crematorium. Alternatively, the burial or cremation can take place first and be followed by a memorial service in church.

Burials or interment of ashes are usually in the Burial Ground on Halls Lane, which is run by the Parish Council.  You can look in the Parish Council pages on this site for the relevant parish councillor to contact.

Your funeral director will help ensure there is as little as possible for the family to worry about.

Please call or email if you would like to speak with someone about a funeral and how we can help.

St Lawrence Cafe

a good cup of Coffee...and more!

The cafe is a social event organised by members of the church.

It is open on the third Sunday of every month from 9.30am in the Neville Hall.

Thanks to the cafe sponsors, we can offer the village a Free Breakfast - to which all are welcome.

And this isn't just a simple continental breakfast either. Cafe customers can enjoy Bacon or Sausage in a Roll, Toast, Beans, Croissant, Pain-au-Chocolat, Danish Pastries, Cheese & Cold Meats, Preserves, Fruit, Yoghurt, Muesli, Fruit Juices, and of course freshly-brewed real Coffee and Tea.

Yes, it really is free...

...but the cafe accepts optional donations to cover costs, and any surplus over costs goes to the church.

The cafe also has performances and exhibitions from time to time e.g. songs from the junior choir, or a show of work by local artists.

The St Lawrence Cafe idea was borrowed from CafePlus+ in Haddenham (see CafePlus+)

Appeal for the Churchyard Wall

The church is a focal point for the whole community, whether people attend regularly or not. It is used for baptisms, weddings, funerals and national occasions like Remembrance Day. The Churchyard wall needs urgent repairs as shown in these photographs:

The expected costs will be around £6,000 and we want to have the repairs done this coming summer.
If you can help, please download this form. Any surplus donations would go to the restricted account for Children and Music in the PCC Accounts.

Bell Ringing

There are six bells in the church, rung each Sunday morning in the traditional call to worship. We practice on Monday evenings, and we also ring for weddings, funerals, memorial services and other special occasions.

The bells are rung from a first floor ringing platform which is open to the church and is reached by a short spiral staircase. The tenor weighs 12cwt.

Ringers of all experience are welcome to join us; we regularly have visitors from local towers at our practices..

WSLAnyone keen to learn how to ring, or just curious about bellringing, is also very welcome to come along to a practice to find out more. We currently have children and adults learning to ring with us. .

We are a friendly band, ending our practices with a drink at The Bell opposite the church. We also arrange outings to other towers and join in local deanery ringing events..

The tower is affiliated to the Oxford Diocesan Guild of Church Bell Ringers and is part of Sonning Deanery branch.

Ringing times are as follows: Service ringing, 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th Sundays: 9.30-10am, 3rd Sunday: 10-10.30am Practice ringing, Mondays: 7.30-9.00pm
